Community Over Convention: Why the Best Meeting Venues Choose IACC

January 19, 2026

Not a Traditional Association

By Mark Cooper, CEO, IACC

For many years, associations in our industry have been defined by what they collect — members, logos, locations and statistics. IACC was created for a very different reason.

At its core, IACC is a global gathering place for meeting and conference venue professionals and a trusted home for meeting planners seeking a truly gold-standard venue experience. It exists to support venues that believe meetings matter — not just commercially, but strategically. But IACC is not — and has never aspired to be — a traditional association.

A Peer Leadership Network

IACC exists as a peer leadership network for organisations that are meeting-first rather than room-first, that prioritise outcomes over occupancy, and that understand meetings as strategic business tools rather than transactional products.

This distinction is critical. Meeting-first organisations design environments, services and teams around learning, decision-making and human connection — not simply space utilisation. IACC Certified venues represent the top 1% of small to mid-sized conference and meeting venues and hotels globally — not because of scale alone, but because of intent, operational quality and leadership mindset. Membership is by qualification, not application.

Where the Real Competition Is Mediocrity

One of the most distinctive characteristics of the IACC community is openness. Many of our members operate in the same markets and serve the same clients, yet they share openly — ideas, data, challenges and lessons learned. They do so because they recognise that the real competition is not each other, but mediocrity. This culture of trust allows innovation to move faster, standards to rise higher, and leadership teams to make better decisions — not in isolation, but collectively.

Member study tours, like this one in Paris, open minds to new ideas and are built on sharing for the collective betterment of the IACC member community.

Learning Through Shared Experience

Member study tours, knowledge exchanges and global gatherings expose leaders to different cultures, operational models and ways of thinking. These experiences open minds, challenge assumptions and encourage fresh perspectives — all grounded in the belief that shared learning benefits the entire IACC community, not just individual organisations.

Elevating Excellence Beyond Our Members

Equally important is IACC’s role in recognising and amplifying the individual achievements of our members. The meetings they host, and the standards they set, do not exist in isolation.

Through IACC, those achievements are elevated into the wider meetings industry and used to educate meeting planners to source venues through a lens of excellence — one that prioritises experience, learning outcomes and long-term value.

Education, Not Lead Generation

IACC has never been, and never will be, a lead-generating organisation. Our purpose is not to transact business on behalf of our members or promise direct commercial return. Instead, we believe in education — helping planners better understand what great meetings look like, why they matter, and how venue environments directly influence outcomes. By raising industry understanding, we support the entrepreneurial success of our members while protecting the integrity of the community.

A Home for Those Who Keep Raising the Bar

IACC is a home for venues and hotels that believe excellence is not static. Our members invest intentionally in people, design, technology and experience, knowing that long-term relevance depends on constant evolution. When organisations align with IACC, they are not joining to become something different. They join because they already operate at a level that values leadership, learning and accountability.

Why Community Matters More Than Ever

In an industry facing commoditisation, rapid change and rising client expectations, community matters more than ever. Not just any community, but one built on trust, shared values and a collective commitment to excellence.

That is what IACC stands for — and why the world’s most forward-thinking meeting venues and hotels continue to choose community over convention.
